Halloween. It’s not just candy handouts. There’ s also the pressure of coming up with a great costume. Here’s a hint: ditch the Ray Rice costumes and instead look to the NFL’s good guys.

As noted by Feministing: “Halloween always reminds me that there are things far scarier than ghosts and goblins, things like racism and misogyny that persist when the costumes are packed away and November 1st rolls around.”
So here’s the thing: Those Ray and Janay Rice Halloween Costumes are not funny. Or clever. Or entertaining.
And really, you shouldn’t need me to tell you this.
Don’t do the “couples costume thing” with it. (Don’t even get me started on the #hitabitch and #illtaketheelevator hashtags. Scary indeed.)
And definitely do not dress up your child like this. #FAIL

If you are dying to employ an NFL sports theme for your costume, we recommend checking out some of the good guys:
- Got a yellow polo shirt, jeans, a big heart, and a cannon arm? You can dress up as Green Bay Packers QB, Aaron Rodgers. (Packers jersey and Cheesehead, optional)
- Got a blue button down, chinos, a winning smile, and the patience to spend time with three girls? You can dress up as Indianapolis Colts LB, Andy Studebaker. (Another option is a Colts QB, Andrew Luck, costume used is identical to Teen Wolf)
- Now, if you like being a Super Bowl champion that overcame a disability, and also likes giving back to inspire kids with that same disability, you can dress up as Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks, the first legally deaf player in the NFL.
- If you like the whole ‘loving father doing anything for his daughter thing,’ you might want to check out the Cincinnati Bengals Defensive Tackle Devon Still jerseys. Happy to report they are selling like hot cakes.

These are just a few helpful suggestions, of course. It’s up to you. The possibilities for the perfect costume truly are endless.
I mean, if you have a group and hockey is your thing and also you happen to be Frozen fan, you can always do what the Boston Bruins did on their visit to Boston Children’s Hospital:

To recap, life is already too disturbing* to glorify domestic violence in the name of ‘having fun.’
If you’re thinking about dressing up like Ray Rice, our advice is to ‘Let it go.’
Pick a super hero instead.
